Mythograph May-June 2024

This is what my mother and I don’t talk about: That it is not my fault she is so profoundly unhappy with her life. That she had a chance to know me — really know me, as an adult and an artist and a human being — and she blew it. That I have not regretted our estrangement for one single second; in fact, I keep waiting for the regret to appear and being surprised when it doesn’t.

Carmen Maria Machado, “Mother Tongue”, in “What My Mother and I Don’t Talk About”, edited by Michele Filgate

I like it better here where I can sit just quietly and smell the flowers.
